Visit To Abyss & Habidecor
I recently traveled to Portugal for a week and got the chance to stay at the incredible Quinta De Lemos and visit Abyss & Habidecor’s home base in Viseu, a city northeast of Lisbon.
I first met Mr. Celso De Lemos when he visited the Chicago and Lake Forest stores last fall. After speaking with him more about the background of Abyss, I knew I had to check Portugal off my bucket list. Abyss & Habidecor is a brand Bedside Manor has carried for many years and we are happy to stand behind this beautiful bedding and bath line.
I arrived at the breathtaking Quinta De Lemos mid-day and was eager to explore the hotel and vineyard right away. I met Maria, the sweetest host, at the top of the vineyard where the hotel is located. Maria helped make my visit to Abyss & Habidecor such a special and memorable experience.
The look of Quinta de Lemos is very modern and organic. Large windows expand across the side of the building that showcase the beautiful views of the land. The interior has a minimalist aesthetic with cement floors and walls throughout the building.
To top off the incredible views, the amazing design aesthetic, and warm welcome, all of the rooms are dressed with Abyss & Habidecor products. The room I stayed in had neutral tones throughout which coordinated with the natural beauty of the vineyard. Warm shades of taupe and khaki were seen in the cozy sateen bedding and plush Ecru and Gold super pile towels.
After I settled into the room, I followed Maria to the Abyss & Habidecor headquarters to tour the factory. Similar to Quinta De Lemos, I walked into a modern showroom filled with beautiful bed linens—a dream come true. It was fun to meet with Mr. De Lemos and the creative design team behind the brand!
After the visiting the showroom, I walked through the process behind making the Double Tub Mat and the Must Bath Rug from start to finish. First, a machine cuts raw fabric to make the base of the bath rug (shown below), which creates the shape of the rug. Next, colorful yarns are sewn onto the base. Then, the edges are cut and finished by hand. Abyss & Habidecor is known for their colorful towels and unique bath rugs that we love to display and sell at Bedside Manor. After seeing the products made first hand, I was really able to appreciate all the hard work that goes into each and every item.
I then walked through where some of the unique bath rugs are made, like the Feuille Rug. Spools of yarn are connected to a large machine which can produce two different rugs at the same time–so cool! Overall, it was fascinating to experience the behind the scenes action of the product that I work so closely with every day.
I learned so much about the process and will be forever grateful for my time spent at Quinta De Lemos and my visit to Abyss & Habidecor. Mr. De Lemos, thank you for being such a gracious host and allowing me to take a closer look into your world. I can’t wait to visit Portugal again!
